Live Storytelling & Civic Engagement: Submit Your Story Today!

Civic engagement doesn’t have to be boring. It can be sexy.  SE Uplift Neighborhood Coalition is attempting to really get people, ahem, excited about the opportunities for involvement that are unique to Portland.

Verbal storytelling is an incredible medium, but it seems like it’s been forgotten in the sea of new and old media. We lost the art of the soliloquy to the silver and touch screens.

We feel that it is time we spice up civic engagement by going back to the roots – charismatic storytellers getting on a stage and delivering a compelling story to a crowd.

Storytelling allows us to make everyday connections to the people around us. With your story-savvy expertise, SE Uplift will host an inspirational night at the Bagdad Theater, where ‘so-and-so’ (we mean you!) tells humorous and bizarre stories of neighborly interaction. The audience shows up ready to be entertained, they laugh, they cry, maybe they start thinking about their own communities. By the time they walk out of the theater it hits them; “Hmmm, maybe I should get to know my neighbors?”

You can help us by telling YOUR story! Do you have stories of bizarre and humorous neighborly interaction? Have your neighbors ever saved you from a desperate situation? Did you ever have an encounter with your neighbor that left you dreading ever having to face them again?  What’s the most epic battle you’ve ever fought against/alongside your neighbors?

SUBMIT YOUR STORY HERE.

No? Not for you? Not a problem. Can you identify that person in your circle? Pass this email on or post to your Facebook page.

Approximately 10 lucky storytellers will share their stories live at the Bagdad Theater on September 17th!!

Volunteer at the Lift UP emergency Food Pantry

Lift Urban Portland operates a Food Pantry at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, at 1808 NW Irving. Pantry hours of operation are Tuesdays and Fridays, noon to 2 PM. Volunteers are needed on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

Right now they are especially looking for a few new TEAM LEADERS who are very reliable, responsible for open and closing the pantry, working with other volunteers, and participating in making decisions and coordination.

Lift Urban Portland serves community members within eligible income guidelines, who live at a Northwest Portland address, or in the triangle bounded by West Burnside, SW 10th & SW Taylor. They may visit the choice-based pantry once a month and select from canned goods, and categories of pasta, meats, and produce.  The order in which they are permitted to enter the Food Pantry and select their food is based on a lottery for place in line held just before the doors open.

What the volunteers do:  Food pantry volunteers unload foods, stock shelves, sign in customers, serve customers, keep the pantry clean.  Lift UP also prepare bags of perishables to include in our home delivery program for neighbors who are home bound.

Many of the Food Pantry tasks involve lifting heavy boxes and crates so if heavy lifting isn’t your thing, be sure to let them know that you prefer lighter, more detailed tasks such as signing people in, sorting and cleaning.  On the other hand, if you think that hefting 40-lb boxes of veggies is a good way to combine a personal workout with service to your community, let them know that too!

Contact Lift Urban Portland for more information, Phone: (503) 221-1224   |    [email protected]   |   2701 NW Vaughn St., Suite 102 Portland, OR 97210.

Portland Street Seats Program Update

If you are unfamiliar, Street Seats is a program of the Portland Bureau of Transportation that permits organizations to build a temporary platform in the on‐street parking lane. The platform is the same height as the curb and extends the sidewalk space in order to add additional outdoor seating for a restaurant or to provide additional public space for people to stop, sit, and take in the life of the street. This program is based on similar programs in San Francisco and New York City, the Portland Bureau of Transportation experimented with a pilot Street Seats project in 2012.

After soliciting feedback from community members and business owners, PBOT announced a refined program earlier this spring with an application deadline of May 1st. They received a total of 16 applications by the May 1st deadline, all of which are pending internal review. They are listed below and can be seen online on this map.

Neighborhood PLACE: Summer Camps in Goose Hollow & Linnton

Tsuga Community Commission launches new day-camp program taking place in Portland this summer. Registration is now open for up to 40 applicants from each of three neighborhoods through June 21st 2013. Click here for additional information and to sign up today.

The Oregon nonprofit Tsuga Community Commission (TCC) opened registration this week for a new program, Neighborhood PLACE: Parks Learning and Community Enhancement. This social capital improvement project will be piloted in three Portland Neighborhoods this summer with funding from Metro, Neighbors West Northwest, Southeast Uplift, the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association, and Tsuga Community donors.

Neighborhood PLACE is a free ($25 registration fee), one week day camp program for participants age 9 – 14 from a given neighborhood. Its an innovative curriculum that introduces youth and teens to local land use issues, involves them in experiential education field trips, and results in a service learning community enhancement project at the end of each week.

Each week of camp will involve a different set of youth from around Portland; youth from within each neighborhood focus area. The Hotel Deluxe roof top event space will serve as home base for Neighborhood PLACE: Goose Hollow. The campus of Warner Pacific College will host Neighborhood PLACE: Mt. Tabor. Kingsley Park will receive a site design plan by participants at Neighborhood PLACE: Linnton.

“There are opportunities all around us for kids to learn from our urban, residential, industrial reuse, and park spaces in Portland,” said Akari Anderson, Programs Manager for Tsuga Community Commission. “We’re excited to be working in so many unique venues this year.”

Tsuga staff are often involved in the regional environmental education programming when not at camp together each summer. The name Tsuga (/ˈsuːɡə/) comes from the taxonomy designation for Hemlock trees growing in Oregon. Hemlock trees are important secondary species growing out of nurse logs and old-growth stumps where they must expose their roots to become established characters in a mature forest.

“We’re in our eighth year of working on camp programming from a statewide perspective and excited for this opportunity to focus on neighborhood scale capacity building,” said Ethan Erickson, Executive Director of Tsuga Community Commission. “Our staff and funding partners recognize how important it is to involve youth and teens in local governance beginning with identifying observable issues and appreciations of each community, and then coming together in a collaborative manner to respond in the form of a service learning improvement project.”

Provide Your Input to Update the Portland Comprehensive Plan

The City of Portland is working to update the Portland Comprehensive Plan – the city’s long-range plan to prepare for and manage expected population and employment growth, as well as plan for and coordinate major public investments, over the next 25 years. Workshops focusing on proposed goals and policies (Working Draft Part 1) were held in February and March. Click here to find Part 1 of the Comprehensive Plan Working Draft. Feedback on some our most challenging issues is still welcomed. Please take the survey, which closes on May 1, 2013. You can also submit comments here.

Up next: Part 2 of the Working Draft, anticipated this summer, will include land use maps and project lists for transportation and other infrastructure. Part 2 will complement and map policy directions proposed in Part 1. To prepare for Part 2 of the Working Draft, the City’s District Liaisons will be talking with community members in May and June to gather district-specific information, comments and ideas to help develop draft maps and connect the policies with specific mapping possibilities. (For more information, please contact Joan Frederiksen (503 823-3111), West District Liaison. In the fall, the City will hold another series of community workshops focused on mapping questions and infrastructure choices.
