Mayor Sam Adams directed the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) to
evaluate locations that would serve as volunteer operated communication sites in the event of a major earthquake. The sites are called BEECNs (for Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node).
PBEM has since designated 48 of these sites; two for each of Portland’s 20-Minute Neighborhood Hubs. In early December, every household in the City of Portland will receive a postcard with a map of the BEECNs and an explanation for their use.
